Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an international activist movement, originating in the African-American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people.
It all started with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social in response to the acquittal of the African-American teen Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman. After the death of Michael Brown in Missouri a year later Black lives matter soon became recognized nationally for its demonstrations. The originators of the hashtag, and later the founders of the movement, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi, expanded their project into a national network. The project is now a member-led global network of more than 40 chapters.
There has been many reactions to the Black Lives Matter movement. Soon the phrase “All Lives Matter” sprang up as a response. Following with the phrase “Blue Lives Matter” supporting the police officers who was shoot killed in Ferguson.
