Last June it was decided to end the UK´s membership of the EU, and it has put the spotlight on Scotland´s constitutional future. Whilst large areas of the UK voted to leave the European Union, in Scotland, all 32 of the local authority areas voted to remain. What impact might Brexit have on Scotland`s future?
Studies have suggested Brexit, a hard Brexit, leaving the UK outside the single market and customs union, which is what the British government still insists it wants, could hit the Scottish economy very hard. (The Guardian) Scotland`s economy faces losing up to £16bn a year, according to a Scottish government forecast. A leaked UK government analysis of the impact of Brexit on the country’s economy has been described as “devastating” by Nicola Sturgeon. (BBC) Sturgeon also says she will decide later this year whether to pursue a second referendum. “The U.K. government has decided to remove Scotland not just from the European Union but from the single market as well, and that’s clearly against the will of the majority of people who live here.” Sturgeon said.
